Stochastic Resonance

Waves in full color No. 1 & No. 2, colored pencil on paper, 14 x 17 inches (left) 11 x 14 inches (right)

This series of pencil drawings emphasizes noise as a means of articulation and embraces the malfunction of systems through labor-intensive hand-drawn waves and bursts that reference digital processes. Stochastic resonance is a phenomenon whereby noise is introduced to a signal to increase legibility and aid communication. Naturally bound to representational imagery, I challenge my desire to depict the knowable, opting instead for an exploration into the abstract as a system for engaging with the unknown. In order to achieve this abstraction, I employ methods that combine chance, intuition and structure.
